Deborah Gould

ist assoziierte Professorin für Soziologie an der University of California in Santa Cruz (und gehört dort darüber hinaus den Fakultäten für feministische Studien, für die Geschichte des Bewusstseins sowie für Politik an). Nach ihrer Promotion in Politikwissenschaften an der University of Chicago 2000 folgten vier Jahre als Harper-Schmidt Fellow der Society of Fellows in the Liberal Arts ebenda. Ihr Buch Moving Politics: Emotion and ACT UP’s Fight Against AIDS (University of Chicago Press, 2009) wurde mehrfach ausgezeichnet, u.a. als Distinguished Contribution to Scholarship Best Book Award (American Sociological Association’s Political Sociology Section, 2010) sowie mit dem Ruth Benedict Book Prize (American Anthropological Association, 2010). Aktuell arbeitet sie an einem weiteren Buch zu Emotionen in der Politik, das unter dem Titel Composing Collectives: Appetite, Encounters, and the Not-Yet of Politics erscheinen wird. Gould engagierte sich viele Jahre in der Bewegung ACT UP/Chicago und später bei Queer to the Left, und sie war Gründungsmitglied des Feel Tank Chicago, einem Zusammenschluss aus Akademiker_innen, Kunstschaffenden und Aktivist_innen, der insbesondere durch seine »International Parades of the Politically Depressed« Bekanntheit erlangte.

In the past decade the relevance of emotion and affect in societal dynamics and power relations has increasingly become the focus for scientists and artists. Across disciplines they are breaking down the opposition of cognition and feeling, and emphasizing the central meaning of emotions and affective atmospheres for personal judgement, decision-making and the realm of politics. The present publication can be seen as an enhancing contribution to these discourses. It particularly focusses on artistic positions, which are brought into dialogue with philosophical, gender-theoretical or neuro- and social-scientific approaches. It addresses the ambivalent political dimensions of anxiety, hope and empathy, as well as the relationship between emotion and habit or the power of (media-)technical affective processes. The publication is the result of the sixth annual programme of the cx centre for interdisciplinary studies of the Academy of Fine Arts Munich.
